Enrico Serafino has began making traditional-method sparkling wines at his home Roero estate in 1878. No one has done more to carry an AVA than Enrico and his work in the Alta Lango. He was a paramount piece in setting up the Alta Langa DOC in 2002 as well as having the wines shine on an international stage.
The big thing here is consistency. These guys don’t try to do too much – they make a few wines, and they’re always excellent. They produce three Alta Langa DOCG wines, with their ZERO Alta Langa Metodo Classico being awarded the Best Italian Sparkling Wine of the Year by the prestigious Gambero Rosso Guide in 2014.

The 2019 Brut Oudeis, from Alta Langa, is remarkably pretty, with a delicate blend of peaches and young mango complicated by hints of incense and spice. This displays round, soothing textures and juicy acidity with a core of tart orchard fruits that add a lovely tension toward the close. It finishes with medium length, leaving a twang of sour citrus and a steely minerality that adds a tactile touch. The 2019 is beautifully crafted and displays incredible balance. Well done. Oudeis, a blend of pinot noir with 15 percent of chardonnay, offers an elegant balance of tangy citrus and green apple flavors in a lush, pearly texture, with a refreshing saline finish.
The Tonelli family are royalty in this region, with four generations of grape growers leading the way and even establishing the local D.O.C. The family’s 2022 Ponente is 100% Sangiovese and is an absolutely incredible wine for the price. Comfortably less than $20/bottle for fleshed out, high-toned, zipped up Sangiovese? Count me in. It screams for pizza or summer salads, squash or a charcuterie plate. It’s about to be one of your new favorites if it’s not already from last vintage.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
