If there’s one request I get more than any other – it’s for lip-smacking, fruit-packed Cabernet for under $30. The problem is that with few exceptions (CHAD, Carl Roy, Juliana Layla), explosive Cabernet for less than thirty bucks is as rare as an pessimistic Eagles fan or an optimistic Met’s fan. It’s an impossible find.
A few months ago, I was dutifully tasting blind through a series of Cabernet’s from Double Canyon – three in total. I’ve always been a fan of their lineup. Sixty-five dollar wines that frankly over deliver and consistently garner 92-94+ from the experts.
The price tag was too high though, despite the wines being excellent– that was until we got to the third and final wine.
Here it was– exactly what you’ve been asking for. An absolutely fruit-packed, food-friendly Cabernet that Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate describes as “Bursting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of ripe cherries, sweet berry liqueur… core of ripe fruit, good balancing acids and ripe but youthfully chewy tannins.” James Suckling lobbed on another 90-point score as if that would matter.
But, could we get it for less than $30? You bet. $25 at the winery. $21.25 today for the Nicholas family.

At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
