The amazing Dominique Roger manages Domaine du Carrou in Bué, one of the 14 communes in the Centre-Val de Loire that is located in the Sancerre appellation. Since the 17th century, 8 generations of the Roger family have produced wines in the Bué area of Sancerre, which is known for exceptional terroir and producing complex wines.
He like many winemakers from Burgundy and the Loire Valley in 2021 ran into a bit of a problem. Adverse weather in the spring means little Sancerre to go around for the 2021 vintage. In most cases, the wines will be excellent, there just won’t be much of it.
With yields down as much as 80% for some wineries, there are several approaches people are taking to ride out the storm. I’ve spoken to dozens of affected producers but when speaking to Dominique a couple of weeks ago, I heard this one for the first time.
He’s going to do absolutely nothing. While others are doubling prices or only selling direct, only servicing top restaurants, etc … Dominique will be selling his 2021s at the normal annual price adjustment and in the same percentage of allocation as he always has.
Drawn off the highest in elevation in Sancerre with the most calcareous soil, it is a chiseled, tightly wound and incredibly complex Sauvignon Blanc, which I’d argue is one of the best in the world and certainly from one of the best and most consistent winemakers in the Loire Valley.

“The 2020 Sancerre from Dominique Roger hails entirely from his parcels in the village of Bué, with the parcels planted on the full range of terres blanches, caillottes and silex that can be found in this commune. His vines are all at least twenty-five years of age for this bottling, which he ferments and raises in stainless steel. The 2020 version is a lovely example, offering up a pure and quite complex bouquet of lime, gooseberry, fresh-cut grass, a complex base of minerality, citrus zest and a top note of white flowers. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a superb core, a great spine of acidity and a long, superbly balanced and zesty finish. This is outstanding Sancerre! 2021-2030”.
The Sancerre Blanc is uncommonly fine, with a brilliant, pale green color and soaring aromatics of green apples, pear and jasmine.

Beautiful on its own, it could also be enjoyed with a cheese plate, a light salad or with some seasoned summer veggies.
The newly released 2022 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin has some big shoes to fill as the last four vintages have earned 92-points or higher, but the early indications are that this is line with previous vintages if not even a little bit ahead at this stage. The problem is – there’s almost none to go around with much smaller yields. Still this is beautiful and crisp, with good focus, energy and depth. I get the signature green fruits on the nose, with some Asian pear, and a hint of jasmine blossom. There’s a beautiful mineral streak that highlights this one. It’s a fantastic White Burg for the price.

This is a huge favorite of folks in the Red Bank area. It’s a bold, unapologetic Chardonnay with juicy notes of peach, lemon sorbet, baking spice and vanilla with a rich, creamy middle and plenty of natural acidity to balance it out. The lemon vanilla finish is perhaps the wine’s calling card or the sheer drinkability of it all. Either way, it’s a Chard that people adore. It’s no wonder Wine Enthusiast called this, “a big win for fans of this bold style”.
One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. This is serious, high-quality and hand-harvested Moscat, that oozes with sweet tropical fruits and a hint of minerality that stays on your tongue with each sip. This is also the perfect wine for anyone searching for a low alcohol option as well.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
