Janine and Teddy Crochet’s tiny domaine in the heart of Sancerre had just hit its stride in NYC. Near the entirety of their US allocations of Sancerre Blanc 2017 and 2018 were reserved for guests at the Union Square Hospitality Group, Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Café, Manhatta and The Modern.
Limited by lower yields, Crochet’s spring 2020 allotment was similarly thin; a 2019 Sancerre again destined for Danny Meyers’ by-the-glass programs. I know, when I saw them last January, I told them how much I enjoyed their Sancerre, having a $23 glass whenever I dined at Gramercy. Worth every penny, IMO, the experience was always truly world-class.
Sadly, in March, COVID thrashed the restaurant business all over the world. Like Restaurant Nicholas, Gramercy and all the Danny Meyer restaurants are closed. But, friends help each other out and instead of having USHG saddled with inventory they can’t sell, I’m lucky enough to be able to offer their house Sancerre by the glass to all of you.
The price is unheard of for artisanally produced, estate bottled Sancerre… on cases, it’s under $20/btl. That’s no typo. The 2019 is vibrant and so fresh, with aromas and flavors of green apple and quince with a stony finish that speaks to the special limestone that graces the hillsides of Bué.

It is the quintessential summer-white, this electric white wine is best served cool with any kind of seafood. My favorite? Lobster rolls!
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. This is serious, high-quality and hand-harvested Moscat, that oozes with sweet tropical fruits and a hint of minerality that stays on your tongue with each sip. This is also the perfect wine for anyone searching for a low alcohol option as well.
