This one comes from Bodegas Garzon, a winery that is easily the best in the country but is making a push as one of South America’s elite. They are consistently racking up some big scores and great press and are essentially the first to break through each and every barrier with American wine writers.
Consider this: they are the first winery in Uruguay to win Wine Enthusiast’s “Winery of the Year” award, the first to be featured in Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines of the Year,” the first to be featured in Wine Spectator’s “NY Wine Experience,” and have already become South America’s largest Albarino producer.
These guys are working from a winemaking oasis, and they’re not messing around. The region is tiny but ideal, located amongst rolling hills that meet the sea in a tiny, low-traffic town famous for farming. With the influence of the sea, the heavily sloped vineyards, and a soft, stony soil, the wines here are both elegant and complex with juicy, tropical-fruit flavors, backed by minerality, salinity and a strong acid backbone.

90 Points, Wine Spectator
Aromas of gooseberry, finger lime and ginger lead off in this refined but refreshing white, with saline-laced grapefruit and Meyer lemon at the core, followed by a clean finish.

For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
