Domaine Barmès-Buecher is a family affair from the southern Alsace, striving to create the most expressive and powerful wines as Mother Nature will allow. Domaine Barmès-Buecher is completely biodynamic, an ancient and organic way of farming using no chemicals. This process, although incredibly time-consuming and expensive, allows the vines of Domaine Barmès-Buecher to be healthier and to produce riper, more balanced fruit than any of their neighbors.
The secret to these aromatically dynamic wines is the strength and vitality of the vines from which they originate. Only vines like these can create their Cremant d’Alsace, a bone-dry sparkling Blanc de Blancs. It’s a blend of Chardonnay and all the Pinots; Auxerrois, Blanc and Gris. Made in the method of champagne, with no dosage, this elegant sparkler is intensely aromatically, bursting with mineral laced fruit. The bubbles are so fine, the fruit, generous, layered, just perfect for any occasion.
As long as I can remember, the family never sends this one in for scoring, but it just so happens this year they did. Suckling unsurprisingly fawned over this beauty with a huge 94-point for the category, and he raved, “What a beautiful balance this round, generous, creamy and silky sparkling has.”

This champagne is so good, it’s often a staple on the wine lists of Michelin two and three star restaurants. It offers elegant aromatics, pristine fruit and the crisp, mineral finish that screams for food. We loved it so much, we asked Jacques Diebolt to bottle a special cuveé for the restaurant– and he happily agreed, but unfortunately it sold out like hot cakes. No matter, here is old faithful. Just as delicious and memorable as I remember it.

Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.

If you don’t know about the wines of Graham Tatomer, you need to change that in a hurry. I was at a tasting with a number of top Santa Barbara producers this past week, this wine absolutely stole the show. I’d argue that Graham is making the very best non-Chardonnay white wines in all of America right now. Judging by the way his wines are scored, very few folks would disagree. This crushes with sweet stone fruit up front and some great minerality and acid to back it up. Made from both John Sebastiano and Kcik-on Ranch Vineyards, this is exactly as Antonio Galloni describes it “a thing of beauty”.
