You’d have to know exactly where you were going to find the small commune of Sizzano in Piemonte. Though it’s hardly known outside of the region, it’s one of the oldest, most well-established DOCs in Italy. At altitudes much higher than those in Barolo, the Nebbiolo here is fruitier and more refreshing compared to the big, dense and often leathery Barolos. But the unique expression of Nebbiolo grown high up in Sizzano is no joke.
The most exciting winery out of Sizzano right now belongs to the husband and wife duo Daniele and Sonia at Villa Guelpa. The couple have defied the odds by making some of the most easy drinking, fruity and delicious red wines in Piemonte – the hard way. From the hand harvesting to the winemaking, perhaps hardest of all is raising six children!
With their tiny vineyard, the couple make miniscule quantities of wine but have recently begun importing a sliver of their production to the U.S. Ever since their wine arrived stateside, the cat has been out of the bag, with wine critics flocking to their fruity and approachable Nebbiolo, many preferring it to its much more brooding Barolo counterpart. The wines are a true high-toned treat– an exuberant playful expression.

“Enticing aromas recalling rose, Alpine herbs and woodland berries form the nose along with aromas of dark spice. Vibrant and savory, the elegant palate features ripe strawberry, blood orange and white pepper alongside firm acidity and lithe tannins.”

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
