Today’s wine is courtesy of the Eguren family of Sierra Cantabria and is creating similar ripples throughout the Spanish wine industry, despite not being in Rioja. Their wines, as Josh Raynolds says, are “some of Toro’s most intense, deeply flavored wines.”
I was lucky enough to taste through a lineup of six wines recently from the Egurens, each one flawlessly built. But without a doubt, the best value in the bunch is today’s 2018 ‘Romanico’ from Teso la Monja.
It’s a really, really strong wine that soars in quality way above its modest price tag. This is why Toros demand your attention. Vinous called it, “silky” with “strong energy” in their 92-point review. Suckling gave it a 91 and added, “harmony and some freshness with citrus undertones.”
This is a 92-point Spanish supernova with four 90+ scores that absolutely shines at the price.

Brilliant violet. Fresh black and blue fruits, vanilla, allspice and a hint of cola on the perfumed nose, complemented by a floral nuance. Silky and appealingly sweet, offering juicy boysenberry and cherry compote flavors and a spicy touch of white pepper. Shows strong energy on the gently tannic finish, which leaves lavender and spicecake notes behind.
91 Points, James Suckling
Plum and berry aromas with chocolate and lavender follow through to a medium to full body, round tannins and a fruity finish. Shows harmony and some freshness with citrus undertones.

A year-in, year-out great value, the 2018 Romanico is all Tinta de Toro brought up in used French oak. This charming, fruit-forward, yet surprisingly elegant red has lots of spicy red and black fruits, peppery herb, and graphite aromatics to go with medium-bodied richness on the palate.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
