Mark my words: Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the making. But having just completed a whirlwind tasting of the last several weeks of hundreds of sparkling wines, I have to say Stephan has done it again. Not only is this a delicious (and immensely affordable) sparkler, it might just solve your ‘Champagne hangover’ as well.
Here’s the thing – many Champagnes include as part of the process, a dosage – which is when sugary grape juice is added back into the bottle and even champagnes labeled Brut can have up to 12 g/L of residual sugar. It’s these sugars more than anything else that affect the body in a way many wine drinkers are not used to. Stephan adds zero dosage to his sparklers.
Next – the price. Stephen Steinmetz biodynamically farms his tiny estate by hand in the Obermosel, east of Frankfurt, very close to the border with Luxembourg. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel.
It’s here that is the last safe haven for a delightful grape called Elbling. Grown since the Roman occupation, Elbling was the most popular planting in all of Germany until the early 20th century. Now, less than 1,500 acres remain with a few acolytes like Stephen Steinmetz keeping the varietal alive.

From Soave Classico’s most privileged volcanic-limestone hillsides, comes a brand new release that is going to win a lot of people over. This is a high-tone northern Italian white bursting with white flowers, honeysuckle and stone fruits. Crisp and clean, finishing juicy and surprisingly long. This is a Nicholas Faithful favorite. Even though it’s technically a non-vintage it was last disgorged in the 2020 vintage. La Cravantine, is a sparkling rosé of 100% Cabernet Franc, bone-dry, super fresh and with bubbles so tiny and fine, it puts most “real” Champagne to shame. Appealing strawberry and mineral scents are encased in a firm structure with a dry and spicy quality in the palate. This wine is incredibly versatile – perfect with just about any fish, fried food, or do like I do and enjoy it on it’s own.
This gem comes from a great winery in the heart of the Stags Leap District in Pine Ridge. Their new 2023 CBV hits all the right notes. It’s crisp and bright with crazy aromatics flashing floral notes, orange blossoms, lemon-line, honey, ginger, and honeydew with nectarine and passionfruit flavors and a super clean, citrusy finish. It’s the perfect wine to enjoy on a nice day, with or without some appetizers and/or a nice cheese board.
We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
