Bodegas Muga is Rioja Alta’s premier producer and the Muga family are unanimously considered to be one of Spain’s most important winemaking families. Wines here are some of the best in Rioja or Spain but rather in the world, with Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate even tasting and reporting on their wines separately each vintage.
The winery has practically legendary status due to its philosophy revolving around adherence to tradition, dynamism, and winemaking of the highest quality. Few producers in the world fashion wines that have such a sense of tradition and place as Muga’s.
Muga Rosé, like the other wines from Bodegas Muga, is produced from a blend of trellised and head trained vineyards in the highest altitude zones of Rioja Alta. When Bodegas Muga was founded in 1932, it was actually called Claretes Muga, or “Rosés Muga,” due to the company’s specialty of high quality traditional claretes from Rioja. A clarete is a rosé that is produced from cofermenting red and white grapes. This was particularly common when the highest proportion of red varietals in Rioja was dominated by Garnacha. Today, Muga continues this tradition with Muga Rosé, which is Spain’s most respected and demanded rosé.
Their 2018 Rosado is absolutely killer. Just ask James Suckling who raved about the wine in his 92 point review. At today’s price, this is a case purchase no questions asked.

92 Points, James Suckling
A beautiful rosé as always with a pink salmon color. It opens with rose petals, pink guava, grapefruit, mandarins and freshly squeezed nectarines. Medium-bodied and very salty on the palate. Lithe and oily texture, but a sharp acid backbone. Macabeo, grenache and tempranillo. Drink now.

This is a Nicholas Faithful favorite. Even though it’s technically a non-vintage it was last disgorged in the 2020 vintage. La Cravantine, is a sparkling rosé of 100% Cabernet Franc, bone-dry, super fresh and with bubbles so tiny and fine, it puts most “real” Champagne to shame. Appealing strawberry and mineral scents are encased in a firm structure with a dry and spicy quality in the palate. This wine is incredibly versatile – perfect with just about any fish, fried food, or do like I do and enjoy it on it’s own.
The Bernard Reverdy Sancerre Rose 2022 is gorgeous. A beautiful pale pink to the brim, this baby is fresh and super aromatic with a complex nose of citrus, wild strawberries and white flowers. With air, higher tones emerge, with a great mingling of ripe fruit, and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused on the palate, with concise limestone-drive acidity, this is an elegant, lively, and energetic Sancerre Rose that mirrors the warm vintage but also the old vines rooting deep in stony soils. This is so much better than your run-of-the mill Rose – it’s an ageworthy, food-friendly Rose
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.

The winery made famous by Brad Pitt and Angelina is more famous in the wine world for their fleet of top Provencal Roses made by none other than superstar winemaker Marc Perrin, who has countless times turned the wine world on its head with his 100-point Chateauneuf du Papes at Chateau de Beaucastel. His 2022 Miraval Rose has a great salmon color with juicy notes of macerated cherries, strawberry currants, citrus and a lemon zest. It flashes that refreshing minerality that has become a Provence signature but crafted at 1100 ft above sea level, its crispness and vibrancy is unparalleled.
