Hyde de Villaine is one of the most under-the-radar estates in Napa Valley, its two famous founders (Larry Hyde and Aubert de Villaine) notwithstanding. Guillaume Boudet crafts wines of unreal finesse. Historically, these wines have also aged exquisitely. Many of the selections this year are insanely beautiful… Readers who enjoy wines of finesse and understatement will want to check out these new releases. -Vinous
Usually just 336 cases (eight barrels) are made of the HdV Pinot Noir Ygnacia Hyde Vineyard each vintage. In 2021, a generous vintage, that number was 25 cases higher at 361. Obviously, given the superstardom and the immaculate wines these two combine for, those 336 cases all disappeared in a hurry to their usual channels. But after that, guess who got the call?!?
This is one of the finest Pinot Noir offerings I’ve been able to send out. Unfortunately, I could only get us 60 bottles. But considering the source, the pedigree, and the sheer brilliance of this wine, I hope you don’t mind.
The 2021 HDV Ygnacia Hyde Vienyard Pinot Noir is an absolute dream that is clearly deserving of its 98-point score, the third-highest given out by Vinous for a domestic Pinot in the entire vintage. Galloni absolutely gushed over it, calling out the “beautifully amplified” notes and deeming that this wine “possesses tremendous depth from start to finish.”

The 2021 Pinot Noir Ygnacia Hyde Vineyard is another magnificent wine from Hyde De Villaine. Vertical, deep and explosive, the 2021 possesses tremendous depth from start to finish. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, pomegranate, and spice notes are all beautifully amplified. The 2021 was done with fully destemmed fruit, sourced from 2.5 acres planted in 2010 with four different selections. What stands out most in the wine’s natural concentration.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
