This is not one of those Cabernets that hits you over the head with a ton of fruit or American oak. It does have oak, but it’s 100% French, which imparts different flavors than the American Oak. Instead this one represents a spicier side of Cabernet and it works perfectly. It’s a medium-bodied Cabernet with a ton of personality.
If the wine seems too good for the price, there’s a good reason for that. The wines at Grayson Cellars are made by Larry Levin, one of the more accomplished Napa Valley winemakers around. He earned his chops at Dry Creek Vineyard before running the wine programs at Franciscan, Mt. Veeder, Mondavi, Ravenswood and even Quintessa.
Larry makes wines in his native St. Helena that are driven by varietal character, balance and depth while providing its customers with exceptional value. But he may have outdone himself with the 2022 Lot 10 Cabernet from Grayson. It’s dark fruited, with black pepper nuanced throughout, with a lot of precision and some grippy tannins that start to open up with some time in the glass.

Produced from small lots from around California, this wine offers notes of dried rose petals, potpourri and plums. These flavors give way to watermelon and round out to hot-tamale candy and a dry finish. The wine would pair nicely with braised meats.
This one comes from very old vines in eight different lieux-dits, with the largest portion coming from Le Fourneau. Harvest is all by hand, and this wine sees 18 months in barrels with only 10% new oak. Clement (rightfully) believes that keeping the oak primarily neutral here brings out the most authentic and intense expression of his Pinot Noirs. Take a sip or two of this and you will know exactly what I mean.

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
