Fabre Montmayou wines have been a staple of mine since I launched Nicholas Wines. It’s hard to imagine a wine that delivers more bang for your buck and consistency than what Herve Fabre is able to produce from his 100+ year old vines each vintage. Last year, his 2018 Reserva Malbec landed on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Buys of the Year, James Suckling gave it 92 points and our allocation went quickly.
After tasting Herve’s new release, the 2020 Malbec Reserve, I expected big scores were going to attach to the wine. After the recent 92-point review from James Suckling hit the web last week, it looks like I was right. It has that vibrant and jammy mix of red and dark fruits with great structure and tannins and a sleek core. It’s a BIG RED that dances in the glass and with a small modest price tag.

92 Points, James Suckling
Ripe dark berries, dark chocolate, licorice and toasted oak. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and structured with ripe berries on the palate and a rich finish with some nutty notes. Best after 2023.

Absolutely everything. The best part might be that is equally good with or without food.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
