The folks at Etude have built up an incredible following at Nicholas Wines, but I’m a little worried that the trend may have been put in jeopardy thanks to a few people in the Etude marketing department!
Each year, we’ve been treated to a beautifully well-made, truly gulpable Pinot, full of easy, breezy bright cherry fruits and truly suitable as a cocktail wine. Every year, the power of the Nicholas Wines buyers helps sell every single bottle that makes it out of the winery in a hurry.
But in a 2022 vintage that saw a slightly larger crop, the marketing department at Etude panicked and did something that they haven’t done since 2016: They submitted the little known ‘Lyric’ for expert reviews. Why on God’s green earth did they have to let the cat out of the bag?!? We’ll never know.
Unsurprisingly, Wine Enthusiast’s tasting team loved the wine, giving it a 90-point seal of approval and calling out this silky Pinot Noir for its “cherry-cola components” and making it one of their top 90-point bargains of the year. Good for the winery, but creating a mess for us and our annual allocation!

90 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Fat black-cherry aromas are spiced by cola and clove on the nose of this bottling. The palate is framed by dusty tannins, with more cherry-cola components taking center stage.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
