We’ve seen it time and time again and it’s almost always these sites that end up making the most stunning wines in due time. Today’s offer is one of those stories and it comes from Etna in Sicily – an area previously thought to be ‘untouchable’ in the wine business.
It certainly was the case in 1983 when Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo decided to start a new Sicilian project called Donnafugata (woman in flight). Of course, they were met with a lot of opposition who told them the site was too volcanic to make good wine, especially whites – but the Rallos ignored the talk and built their operation around three sites in western Sicily.
Needless to say, the Rallo’s Donnafugata has made a fool out of critics and more than withstood the test of time. They now own nearly 500 vineyards in Sicily, and have 5 different winemaking and aging cellars in their portfolio. They’ve also been one of the leaders in Southern Italy for championing indigenous varietals with 10 different grape varieties currently a part of their arsenal.

“This bright, savory white shows why Grillo is so popular right now. It opens with heady scents of white spring blossom, white stone fruit and wild Mediterranean herbs. Crisp and tangy, the incredibly enjoyable palate doles out juicy white peach, cantaloupe and saline mineral notes.”

2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Drink 2024-2030.” -Jeb Dunnuck
