Since 1985, the iconic New Zealand estate, Cloudy Bay, has taken no shortcuts in the pursuit of excellence. They have old vines at Cloudy Bay, rooted in sand and gravel soils. There is never a question of ripeness with plenty of that Southern Hemisphere sun. But the growing season is long, ripeness is tempered by cooling breezes from Pacific Ocean. The end result is a world-famous, refined Sauvignon Blanc with great aromatic complexity and length.
The 2019 rendition is fine and elegant, with a crisp and clean mouthfeel and finish; drink this with everything, even Christmas Day pickles! The price is crazy, one of the best in the country. We are likely not to see another price like this on any iconic white all year, load up!

Fish, roasted chicken, shellfish…you can drink this with anything!
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
