For Chad, the big Oregon frost in April took a toll on one of his go-to usual spots in the Dundee Hills. So what did he do? Call it quits and worry about the 2023 vintage instead? Nah, not in his DNA. He made some phone calls, talked to a few key people and locked into some absolutely killer fruit from McMinnville a little further south down the Van Duzer Corridor where the frost had no impact.
For Nicholas Wines readers, the lesson that we should get from all of this is that our winemaking friend Chad is nothing short of a genius. His ability and adaptability are what set him apart, and his quick thinking in the 2022 vintage is why this wine is absolutely humming — juicy and energetic right out of the gates and so dang drinkable.
Bottles from these three vineyard locations go anywhere from $45/bottle all the way up to $75/bottle these days. But that’s never what Chad sets up for his loyal followers. No – instead of a $45/bottle price tag we are treated to something special once again.

The wine is very fine aromatically, with a high-toned, black cherry nose kissed with just a touch of spice. The fruit is absolutely pure Pinot, bright and vibrant. For the price, it’s absolutely killer Pinot.

In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
