Alessandro Castellini’s vision of Valpolicella calls for aromatically driven wines, filled with lively fruit and fresh vibrancy with little oak influence. Friend and winemaker, Alessandro Castellani is famous among Nicholas Wines clients for his blockbuster Amarone, a quintessential Saturday nighter. And rightly so, but Alessandro’s Tuesday nighter is just as impressive.
His 2018 Valpolicella Classico is elegant, with aromas and flavors of spicy raspberries and black cherries. It’s aromatically complex, with fine aromas of blackberries, anise and Asian spices. It is a wine for pizza, fresh, fruity and vibrant, working just as well with the sausage, kale and vinegar pepper pizza as it does with the classic Margherita. Be sure to check it out on your next pizza night.
This blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara is a great choice for a ‘house wine’, as it pairs quite well with a variety of food, from pizza to grilled meat to roasted poultry.

Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
