2012 was a phenomenal year in Rioja if you were one of the winemakers who knew what the heck they were doing. The drought was intense, yields were scarce, and the berries tiny – resulting in super concentrated, powerful versions of Tempranillo that needed to be carefully controlled.
The inexperienced, who didn’t know how to handle that power, were like a 16 year old behind the wheel of a Bugatti– a recipe for disaster.
Not the case at Bodegas Campillo – where they realized from the outset, there was a potential masterpiece lying before them – perhaps their best in 30 years. The vineyards hug the Cantabrian Mountains and benefit from both the elevation and the cooling breezes so the grapes were fully ripened and a bit raisined but not singed.
The winemaking is distinctly non-traditional made in very modern, international – I dare say enjoyable – style. If your going to dip your toe into Spanish wine – this is a great place to start.
The wine has aromas to spare: crushed black & raspberry, vanilla, tobacco, and just a touch of smoke. The mouthfeel is distinctly fleshy – and as Wine Enthusiast noted in their review: “this is muscular … Plum, spice and berry flavors finish with power and purpose; drink through 2027.”

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
