To secure this future Tuesday night Hall of Famer, we had to get way way off the Rue Nationale Finding value takes work and knowledge of the back roads of wine country because it’s never right in front of you. This time, we had to go south and west of Sancerre on the winding roads that lead to the village of Reuilly.
Climate change has been kinder to growers of Pinot here, certainly way more than those in Oregon, again, just ask Chad. In a place where a generation ago red grapes didn’t fully ripen every year, Valéry Renaudat is now producing knocked-out, vibrant Pinot that put to the shame most simple Bourgognes that are double the P’tit Renaudat price.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous

I have purchased a case for a family event and opened one bottle to see if it fit the menu we had planned. I was very pleased, although not surprised because every wine I have purchased from Nicholas wines so far has been excellent. Its was fruit forward, a nice mix of bing cherry and rainier cherry with moderate complexity, and structure. It is an easy drinking wine with food or with out. I am planning on ordering another case for ourselves for the holidays. It is silky on the palate but has a high intensity of flavor. I would say it is very well balanced and over all a pleasing wine in every way. I usually go for Oregon, Washington, or Burgundy Pinots but I am very surprised at this wine, can I say delish?
