Regardless, this is one for both the historians and the wine enthusiasts alike. This is a special cuvee that features mainly fruit from Sta. Rita Hills’ first vineyard together with the immaculate La Riconada Vineyard made by the first winery established in Sta. Rita Hills and still one of the top vineyards in the world.
The sacred vineyard isn’t just home to Sanford and Benedict; Au Bon Climat, Brewer-Clifton, Fess Parker, Foxen, Longoria, Sandhi and Tyler also make wine off this very special place, a who’s who of the best wineries in Santa Barbara. Wine Enthusiast recently named it one of the five most famous and important vineyards in the state.
But this particular wine is just flat out the best deal going in Sta. Rita Hills. I don’t even think it’s all that close.
That’s because their 2018 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir is a highly rated cuvee featuring fruit off Sanford’s two east vineyards with nearly ¾ the blend coming from the iconic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard and the rest coming from the gorgeous La Rinconada Vineyard (pictured below).
It’s a gorgeous and vibrant blend with spicy and bramble notes the result of mixing fruit from eight different soil types. It’s an intricate blend with lots of twists and turns, complexity, savory notes and depth. Even better, this Pinot Noir goes for about half the price of the single-vineyard Pinots from Sanford and nearly ⅓ of the price of most of these upper-echelon Sta. Rita Hills Pinots being made these days.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Muddled black-plum-paste, tart cranberry, mace and vanilla aromas show on the nose of this appellation blend, which comes mostly, perhaps entirely, from estate fruit. The dark-plum and mulberry flavors of the palate are lifted by bay leaf, light thyme and dried sage, and set against a chiseled stone structure.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
