It’s not hard to see why the quality in Bordeaux has risen exponentially in the past decade and a half. Finally, all of these great Chateaux at once realized the value in making more than their flagship bottling – and started devoting a heap of money and resources to build up their ‘super seconds’ program.
Some of the wineries saw the vision first and have become staples in terms of looking for the very best value wines. Today’s Chateau was on the forefront of that change.
In 2009, Chateau Clinet decided to pour all their money into a brand new state of the art wine facility in the heart of Pomerol. That thing is like a straight up science fiction museum.
They decided they’d add another wine to their fleet, ‘an everyday drinking’ Bordeaux that they called Ronan. Utilizing the entire team and some of their younger fruit, they were one of the first to tap into the Bordeaux with immediate drinkability. Now 15 vintages later, Ronan is one of the very best bargains each year in the Right Bank.

93 Points, Decanter
Expressive nose full of ripe red fruits and floral scents. The smooth, sappy red berry fruit is smooth and detailed, succulent, with tannins that are massy and chewy though also have a slightly chalky edge giving more texture and flavor detail. A Merlot dominant blend made by the same team as Chateau Clinet in Pomerol with a collection of growers across Bordeaux. Perfect for drinking, though with life in it yet.

The Merlot-dominated 2016 By Clinet (there’s 5% Cabernet Franc) is a charming, already delicious effort that gives up elegant notes of chocolate-laced plums and dark fruits, notes of leafy herbs and truffle, medium to full body, and a layered, charming mouthfeel. It’s a terrific Bordeaux to drink over the coming 7-8 years or so.

This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
