Adam Tolmach went to UC Davis and studied viticulture and enology, and after graduating in 1976 he settled down on the property his grandfather bought in the Ojai Valley in 1933 to farm sweet corn and melons, selling them at a roadside stand. After two years of this satisfying, yet difficult and nearly profitless work he sought employment in his field of study switching over to wine.
In 1983 he began planting fruit and in the nearly 40 years since then, he has achieved everything one could possibly do in the wine industry. Countless 90+ scores, winemakers who have adapted his styles of winemaking and the top restaurant accounts in the country pouring his wines.
At this point in time, nothing winemaker Adam Tolmach does surprises me but his wines are continuously outstanding. His newly released 2019 Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay is a beautiful compilation of freshness, creaminess and minerality. Lemon and citrus notes followed by a creamy vanilla mid-palate and a long fresh finish. Critics, restaurants and consumers agree, Ojai wines are some of the best bang for your buck on any continent.

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Lots of orchard fruits, buttered lemon, toasty oak, and honeysuckle emerge from the 2019 Chardonnay Bien Nacido, a clean, vibrant Chardonnay from one of California’s great vineyards. Brought up in just 6-7% new French oak, it opens up with time in the glass and shows more and more fruit as well as some classic chalky, salty minerality on the finish. It’s a beautiful Chardonnay.

It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
