The Conero region in Marche has winemaking roots tracing back to the 10th Century B.C. and the Etruscan period. Though Abruzzo gets much of the credit for Montepulciano, it is this staple in Northern Italy known for its chalky, limestone soils as well as birthing the famous winemaker, Cesare Mondavi that make the most expressive and interesting versions of the native Italian grape.
For the past 500 years, one of the only continuous family-owned wineries in the region has been run by the Malacari family. The family has always been heavily focused on Montepulciano, with production of the grape dating back to the 1600’s. In recent years, the family enlisted the help of winemaking expert, Sergio Paolucci. With the help of Paolucci, Alessandro Strarrabba, the current head of the Malacari family’s wine operations, has taken his family’s winery to new heights.
The newly released Malacari’s Rocca Rosso is a testament to that. It’s an old-school rustic gem with dark fruit, baking spice and better structure than any other wine I’ve seen for this kind of price. They make it in giant cement tanks so as not to interfere with the wine’s expression in any way. It’s a perfect every day Red for the Italian wine drinkers – it won’t break the bank and you won’t find a better compliment to food.

“A beautiful mix of violets, roses, lavender and wild strawberries wafts up from the 2018 Rosso Rocca. This varietal Montepulciano impresses further with its inner floral perfumes and balanced sweetness, as vivid notes of cherry and blueberry settle upon the senses. This is such a remarkably pretty and balanced red, tapering off with nuanced tannins that mingle with mouthwatering acidity. It’s a pleasure to taste and a good value as well.”

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
