In the “city of a thousand fountains”, wineries such as today’s Maison Saleya, much like the Sabine from a few weeks ago, enjoy the distinct advantage of nearly 300 meters in altitude. At these heights, the cooler, windier nights allow for slow steady development, extended hangtimes and yield grapes with perfect acidic balance.
Maison Saleya combines the wonderful terroir of the Coteaux d’Aix with a terrific winemaking team, so I’m never surprised by all the high scores and all the accolades like last year’s “Best Buy” from Wine & Spirits Magazine.
With the Rose market coming back after last year’s shipping woes, folks have been jumping on every good Rosé they can get their hands on. But thanks to our support of Maison Saleya last year while most were idle, we’ve been given assurances that there will be enough for a Nicholas Wines Offer.
After the sample bottle crossed my desk last week, I can tell you that this is going to win people over from the first sip. It’s quintessential Provence Rose.
It floods the senses upon opening, hitting with waves of fresh tropical and citrus fruits and herbs de provence. It has vibrant flavors of red raspberry, nectarine and bing cherries with great tension and length and a hint of spice on the finish. Super well-balanced and well structured to boot, this one is really a delight.

We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
The just released 2023 Crochet Sancerre Rosé is drawn from the high elevations of Janine and Teddy Crochet’s Pinot Noir vines in the village of Bué. The conditions are perfect for crisp, delicious Sancerre Rosé. Salmon-pink in color with a pretty nose featuring aromas of roses, orange peel and Bing cherry notes. This is as well-balanced as always with terrific fruit flavors of citrus and red berries with racy a high-toned finish.
94 Points, Tasting Panel – 90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The winery made famous by Brad Pitt and Angelina is more famous in the wine world for their fleet of top Provencal Roses made by none other than superstar winemaker Marc Perrin, who has countless times turned the wine world on its head with his 100-point Chateauneuf du Papes at Chateau de Beaucastel. His 2022 Miraval Rose has a great salmon color with juicy notes of macerated cherries, strawberry currants, citrus and a lemon zest. It flashes that refreshing minerality that has become a Provence signature but crafted at 1100 ft above sea level, its crispness and vibrancy is unparalleled.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
