Nicholas Wines readers first started to gobble up white wines from the steep hillsides of the snow-capped Dolemite Mountains during the pandemic. One after another, they all seemed to be better than the last… Tiefenbrunner, Muri Gries, you name it. The Pinot Grigio pulled from this extreme region in the Northeast of Italy Wowwed readers, one after another. Why were these wines so popular? The answer is simple.
While most Pinot Grigio is grown at low elevations for tonnage and then machine harvested – a precious few are given the kind of vineyard care you might expect out of fine white Burgundy. That’s the situation in this precious corner of Alto Adige – because there’s no other choice.
Elevations are much higher and the slopes can be intense. Machine farming at Kurtatsch is simply not possible. Instead, the low yielding vines are harvested by hand – row by row. Like all great cool-climate wines, the vineyards here benefit from large temperature swings from day to night, which allow for ideal acidity and fruit maturity.
And while Kurtatsch Pinot Grigios always receive a bevy of 90+ scores – a super short 2020 vintage means that we haven’t had this gorgeous PG in our store since the 2019 vintage. Luckily, the 2021 has just arrived and it is excellent. Even better for Kurtatsch, the 2021 has already earned a 91-point score from James Suckling, meaning they’ve kept their 90+ point win streak going for another year.

91 Points, James Suckling
Lots of pear and cooked green-apple aromas follow through to a full body with lots of fruit and a fruity finish. Rather dense in the center-palate. Drink now.

For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. This is serious, high-quality and hand-harvested Moscat, that oozes with sweet tropical fruits and a hint of minerality that stays on your tongue with each sip. This is also the perfect wine for anyone searching for a low alcohol option as well.

If you’ve never heard of Bisci, let’s start here. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called Giuseppe Bisci’s Verdicchio “one of the finest I’ve ever tasted,” and noted that “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” A staple at $85/bottle for both French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” – The Wine Advocate
