Last month, when Wine Spectator listed their best ‘Sure Bet’ wines for each varietal, it was no surprise to see one name leading the Sauvignon Blanc category – Groth. Perhaps best known for their Cabernets, I’ve visited the winery on a few occasions and when you start your tasting with a Sauvignon Blanc, I’m always completely blown away. It’s lights out.
Of course the Cab Sauvs are perennial high-scorers but they’re certainly not the only ones – the Napa Valley Sauv Blanc has seen a 92-point score or higher for the last five vintages (2017-2021) ahead of this year’s new release that has yet to be scored.
Groth’s all-star winemaker, Ted Henry called the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc arguably the best they’ve ever made, which says a lot considering it’s been part of the winery’s lineup since their inception in 1982. Lettie Teague of the Wall Street Journal agreed, calling it “bright and juicy with notes of citrus” pretty much everything you’re looking for in a Napa Valley Sauvy B.

The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
