Over the years I’ve gotten a lot of “fall wine” recommendation requests, which is how the idea of the Fireside Sampler was born. Four full bodied, berried-up Red wines that each bring plenty of backbone and structure to help cold nights warm up. That and they all happen to pair well with fall foods from salads with fruit and nuts, to poultry and fish, to anything with chocolate you can throw at it with dessert!
The 2020 Fall Fireside Case includes:
– (3) Chad Cabernet Blend Napa Valley 2018
– (3) Roberto Ferraris Barbera d’Asti 2018
– (3) Faustini ‘PlayDate’ Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016
– (3) Trousse Chemise Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2018

From the famous family behind Peyrassol, comes a new Cotes du Provence smash hit. The wine is pale pink in color with notes of small wild berries on the nose complemented by a hint of juniper. This spiciness lends weight to the liveliness on the palate reminiscent of exotic citrus fruits, creating a crisp, harmonious and refreshing ensemble. Spice lingers on the palate for a full and round finish.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
