There are not too many wineries that are as notable and as consistent as Far Niente. Their beloved Napa Valley Cabernet comes from a who’s who of the best vineyard sites in Napa. It’s a seamless Cabernet blend sourced from Oakville, Stag’s Leap, Diamond Mountain, St. Helena, Calistoga, Oak Knoll and the winery’s estate fruit in Yountville.
It’s always absolutely killer – so they have no problem fetching the release price of $160/btl. In fact, they usually have a problem keeping enough inventory in stock to last the year. But in 2021, they’ve outdone themselves, releasing a Cabernet that is already one of the highest scored in the wine’s history. 97 Points from James Suckling, 96 more from Jeb Dunnuck and this restaurant and collectors favorite is in rare air. This is not to be missed.

Blackcurrants, fresh mint and thyme, together with black olive-skin character here. It’s full and tannic with classic structure and depth. Solid.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Estate is beautiful, with a perfumed, blue-fruited style as well as classic Cabernet smoked tobacco, flowery incense, spice, and chocolaty notes. Coming from the Stelling Vineyard, not far from Harlan, and made by Nicole Marchesi with consulting advice from Thomas Rivers Brown, this full-bodied, layered, very complete 2021 should round into form with just a few years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years. It’s a beautiful wine.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
