I had so many unforgettable experiences on my last trip to Kentucky but the one that stands out the most was getting to taste through the Wild Turkey rickhouses with Eddie. We had a great afternoon and I get the feeling that I might have even earned a click of respect from him after I passed all his “tasting tests.” He even let me take one of his prized “Russell’s Reserve” barrels from him for a Nicholas Wines offering. He asked me sign the barrel and then he signed it right after me. I had no idea why..
Two years ago now, Eddie Russell surprised me by sending my empty barrel of Russel’s Reserve bourbon to Espolon to age a very special tequila. Don’t tell Eddie, but the tequila sold out even quicker than the bourbon that was originally in the barrel. You know I love to “recycle” so I made sure that I asked Eddie to send this years barrel to Mexico too.
Apparently, Wild Turkey sells their used barrels to Espolon for their bourbon barrel aged tequila. You wanna guess where my barrel ended up?? It spent part of the winter in Jalisco, Mexico filled with tequila and just arrived to Red Bank this week. What an awesome surprise! There couldn’t be any more perfect time of year for Tequila, here it is. Have at it.

True whiskey and Knob Creek enthusiasts are going to go nuts for this one. Knob Creek Rye is as outstanding as it is rare but today we’re lucky enough to bring to you, my own single barrel of it. This is a big gold expression of Rye that holds nothing back. On the nose, there are hints of dill, rye and essence of charred oak. On the palate, you are hit over the head with baking spice, honey and freshly baked bread. The finish is certainly a warm “Kentucky Hug” that goes on forever.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This is the first release of its kind and was just announced last week. I snagged six bottles as soon as I could. It’s a U.S. only release, and it remains to be seen if there will be others. The Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition is triple distilled in copper pot stills and matured in American Bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso Sherry butts. Then it’s finished for a minimum of 4 months in hand selected, air-dried American Oak from the Taylor family farm in Kentucky.
We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
