Three decades after starting Caymus, Charlie and Chuck would be inducted into Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine Hall of Fame’, earning countless ‘Wine’ and ‘Winery of the Year’ awards from multiple publications along the way. The 100% family-owned operation has flourished into one of America’s most iconic brands, and in true Wagner family tradition, was turned over to the next generation, with Chuck handing over some of the reigns to two of his children, Charlie and Jenny.
Making some of the biggest, boldest wines you can find anywhere, you have to wait in a Black Friday-sized line to get your hands on a bottle of their flagship ‘Special Selection’ Cabernet, even when you’re a restaurant owner. Their wine flies off the shelves and has done so long before Forbes Magazine declared it “A Wine-Lover’s Favorite Wine”.
But decades long relationships have a way of creating great opportunities, and today is a perfect example of a dinosaur bone being thrown my way. This was released for $60/bottle by the winery and the cheapest price I could find online before today was $39.99/bottle. But the 10 cases I have can be had for just $35/bottle— smashing our competitors’ pricing. This is a text-only offer. While supplies last..
2018 Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot
We heard your call for more barbecue friendly wines and today we’re bringing you one of the best in the US of A. Jenny Wagner, the youngest daughter of Chuck Wagner has watched her dad carefully balance high-alcohol wines that you never seem to taste on the palate. She took over the reins in 2011 and absolutely ran with it, making Emmolo a big name of its own. In the enormous and widely heralded 2018 vintage, Jenny delivered a classy ode to the Right Bank– crafting a powerful yet elegant, lush dark-fruited Merlot off two of the family’s Oak Knoll vineyards. Smooth, well-balanced tannins drive this wine with intricate flavors of black cherries, blueberries, mocha and violet. This one is a beauty.

Great with a nice piece of steak, swine or poultry.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
