For many years, Clos Julien has been my go-to wine for that first-sip wow factor. The CJ team has an incredible knack of finding some of the most amazing vineyard sources – many just off the critical radar – allowing me to provide customers with immense value (for a while, until everyone else catches up).
This year, they snuck into the blazingly hot San Luis Obispo Coast AVA – a few weeks ahead of the Department of Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) declaring it the newest official appellation.
The new region is being called out from the surrounding region as being a Burgundian grape-growing paradise. The main influence is the proximity to the Pacific, which according to weather data has this clocking in as the coolest AVA in the state. The enormous diurnal temperature swings and Pacific wind create the perfect conditions for the highest quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
So for this vintage only – we have our favorite Chardonnay from the SLO-Coast (locals call it the ‘Slow Coast’ labeled with the much larger Edna Valley AVA, and for our trouble, we’ve got it at half the price of what they wine will sell for when released under the new official AVA!

Delicious by itself as an aperitif but a fantastic foil to the cuisine of summer, scallops, grilled poultry, and summer corn.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
