Step out on to the terrace of Emeric Petit’s elegant Château Tournebrise in Lalande-de-Pomerol and I’ll bet “location, location, location” is the first thing to comes to mind. Just 600 yards away and in clear view from the terrace, lies Château Pétrus, one of Bordeaux’s most famous and sought after red wines. At $1500 or so per bottle, it’s also one of the world’s most expensive. The soil is the same, gravel and clay, the exposition of vineyards, more or less the same too. Aside from the price, what’s not the same is the appellation.
The border between Pétrus and Emeric’s estate is also the border between the famous Pomerol area and the much less known, Lalande-de Pomerol. Why the line is drawn there, who knows? Whoever owned the chateau circa 1780 probably didn’t play the right political game when they drew up the map.
That cost Tournebrise a lot of cash and prestige because aside from Pétrus, you can also see the vineyards of Chateaux Trotanoy and Lafleur-Pétrus, which each command a price-tag of around $300. Not too shabby of a neighborhood for Emeric because when you taste his brilliant 2016, it’s clear that Tournebreise belongs on that block.

The 40% Cabernet Franc in the blend of this wine gives it spiciness and fills out the tannins. This makes for a balanced wine, ripe with black fruits and needing a bit more time. Drink from 2021.
Basically, Château Tournebrise is a blue chip Bordeaux property on the wrong side of the tracks.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
