Being considered by your neighbors and peers as the region’s “most underappreciated man” is a little bit of a dubious honor that I’m sure Patrizio Cencioni prefers he didn’t have – but for now, here we are. A few years ago, when I was in Montalcino tasting mainly Brunellos, Riservas and Rossos, I was blown away by Capanna’s wines. Every. Single. Bottle Patrizio pulled out seemed to be more invigorating than the next, like he was constructing a classical piece of music.
I left dazzled- and asked some of my next stops what they thought about Patrizio and his beautiful Capanna estate. That’s when I learned that most of his peers consider him Montalcino’s most underappreciated man, consistently making fabulous wines that for whatever reason haven’t garnered the crazy prices and feverish sellouts than some of his peers have enjoyed even whilst making inferior wines.
I found it funny when a year later it was echoed in Antonio Galloni’s Tuscan write-up, “Patrizio Cencioni continues to do fabulous work, and yet Capanna remains very much under the radar considering the quality of the wines.”
As many say, the three most important aspects to great Montalcino are location, location, location and there are not many that can compete with the Capanna’s location. Tucked away right along the uber-famous Montosoli subzone in the Northern part of the appellation, there isn’t a better representation of galestro and marine sentiment driven soil. That’s probably why every wine Patrizio makes is outstanding, with more expression and depth than the next.

Lively medium red. Pure, very refreshing aromas and flavors of raspberry, licorice and violet on the drop-dead gorgeous nose. Then sweet and pliant, boasting delightful energy and balance, with the red fruits and subtle herbal notes conveying a distinct coolness on the mineral, vibrant and very long finish. A real essence of Sangiovese, this is an absolutely splendid Rosso di Montalcino. Well done.

#3 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021
96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator
We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
