Borgo Scopeto is a super old, very well-respected producer in Chianti Classico. It is a true Borgo, a hamlet with its own church, post office, town center, and residences and it is owned by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini who also owns Caparzo and Altesino along with some others.
Of her “three headed monster”, it is Borgo Scopeto that is best suited to make Angelini’s only Super Tuscan in her arsenal, with a vineyard unlike any other in Tuscany with multiple variations of soil, rootstock, and Sangiovese clones that can give you a little of everything, especially under the right control. Luckily, for Borgo Scopeto– they couldn’t do much better.
The winemaker is Massimo Bracalente, the man solely responsible for the meteoric rise at Caparzo. One of the Robert Parker Jr.’s all-time favorites in Brunello, he’s the man that delivered you the 96-point, 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Caparzo offered last week. He’s stellar – a constant tinkerer who couldn’t be any more at home in Borgo Scopeto’s magical vineyard– the ultimate sandbox for a man whose curiosity has yet to peak.
Most years, Massimo’s Borgonero SuperTuscan is comprised of almost equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. But in the big, hot 2017 vintage, Bracalente went in a different direction– not needing the power of the Cabernet with the vintage being so ripe and expressive. Instead, Bracalente focused on the structure and balance while adding seductiveness and intrigue with the addition of only Syrah to his Sangiovese-dominant blend and unlocking the perfect balance between power and finesse in the process.

A soft, fruity red showing the ripeness of the 2017 vintage, yet at the same time it’s round, rich and open. Plenty of plum, berry and tile character with a delicious, fruity finish. Drink or hold.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
