I would say in a given year I taste 4-6 dozen Rosés that people bring me to potentially offer up to the Nicholas Wines faithful. I cherry pick the top ones – the best values, the best deals, etc.
This is one of those that stole the show at a tasting – a full-throttle, energetic Rosé made from 100% Pinot Grigio in Venice.
It comes from right near Collio, just to the west of Gorizia, and is conveniently protected from both the cold northern winds and the characteristic “bora” wind of Trieste. There’s ideal gravelly/sandy soils and ample sunlight – perfectly balanced by super cool nights, which leads to extended hang times and juicy fruit that is roaring to go.

Pale coral color with aromas of dried flowers, red apples and grapefruit. Tangy and fruity with medium body and a dry, subtly spicy finish.

Recently Wolffer Estate has expanded their famous Rose line to now include a Cotes de Provence Rose. For my money, it’s hands down a better bottling – an energetic and super fresh pink wine created from the French staple Rose grapes of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah as opposed to the Long Island version that has a whole lot of varietals mixed in. It’s bright and balanced and the perfect treat for the pool or beach as the weather warms.

“Aromas of bark, dark cherries and flowers, too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with purity of fruit that runs the length of the wine. It goes on for minutes. Very fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Needs three or four years to completely come together, but gorgeous. Drink after 2026.” -James Suckling
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
At 350 feet above sea level, growing seasons are often extended with warm days and cool, breezy nights. The diurnal changes of temperature help create healthy vines and grapes that are packed full of complexity, concentration and energy. Ain’t a whole of Provence wineries that can compare. We’ve offered Val de Caire’s spectacular Provence Rouge before, but their bread and butter wine, the Coteaux d’Aix en-Provence Rose has finally been imported into the U.S. for the first time. People are gonna go nuts for this wine.
