For generations, the Almondo family has tended vines of Arneis, the noble white variety of Piedmont. Their six hectares are at elevation, averaging 350 meters. The old vines of the single vineyard, Bricco delle Ciliegie, are rooted in sand that covers an old ocean bed.
The new 2021 release from the Almondos comes roaring right out of the greats, with tremendous energy and aromas flowing from the bottle. Clean, bright notes of white flowers, almonds and a touch of sage with a generous mid-palate that gives layers of concentrated peach and citrus fruit with a mineral streak and a long finish.
The production is tiny, 300 cases or so, so don’t miss it as it is truly one of Italy’s great white wines. Last year it earned a rave 91-point review from Vinous making supply even harder to get a hold of. This year, they’ve outdone themselves with a 92-point beauty that Antonio Galloni fawned over. Just read his review below:
“The 2021 Roero Arneis Bricco delle Ciliegie is a reference point white for the appelalation. White orchard fruit, flowers, mint and green apple lend freshness to a chiseled, mid-weight white that captures the essence of what Arneis is. Sweet floral accents lift the finish effortlessly. I never miss a chance to drink Bricco delle Ciliegie, nor should you.”

Flat out delicious by itself as an aperitif or a terrific complement to just about anything fried or from the sea.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. This is serious, high-quality and hand-harvested Moscat, that oozes with sweet tropical fruits and a hint of minerality that stays on your tongue with each sip. This is also the perfect wine for anyone searching for a low alcohol option as well.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
