In every vintage, there are a few wines that rise above. In 2012, Hall decided to separate a few barrels of these rare wines to bottle individually, creating the Platinum Collection. Each of these wines evokes a clear connection to the valley’s natural splendor. The wine is simultaneously elegant, dense and inviting—conveying a clear glimpse into the soil, slopes and climate from which it came.
Hall has created a platinum club for these wines specifically, an elusive, tiny club of elite members. I managed to snag a single trio from the club in the crazy good 2013 vintage in Napa.
The three wines featured are all Hall’s top cabs, their Rainin Vineyard Diamond Mountain Cab, their “Bishop” Cabernet and the “Sacrashe Vineyard” Rutherford Cabernet. Always scored big, in 2013 it was a whole other story including a perfect 100-point score from Parker himself. Here are all the 2013 scores for this amazing trio:
Hall ‘The Bishop’ Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013 (WE-96, RP-95)
Hall “Sacrashe Vineyard” Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 ( JD-98)
Hall “Rainin Vineyard” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 ( RP-100)

In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
