Two years ago when Wine Spectator gave them the highest rating a Chianti has ever received, rating the wine even higher than the Castello di Ama’s with a $400+ price tag– let’s just say there wasn’t as much to go around.
Ever since then, securing quantities from the phenomenal Tuscan winery has proved a difficult task. Luckily, I managed to get some of this 99-point Supernova– not enough though!
In the terrific 2018 in Chianti, cream rises to the top. Castello di Volpaia’s Chianti Classico Riserva very much resembles the 2016. It’s big and juicy, with layers of dark fruit, bramble and an extremely long finish. It balances vibrant acidity against beautiful tannin and may have even more life ahead of it than the 2016. Buy some for now but make sure to sock a few away. Drink until 2045!

99 Points, Luca Gardini
Sophisticated, elegant and charming, an ode to greatness. On the nose, small red fruits, especially raspberry, hints of laurel, iodized nuances ending on notes of eucalyptus. The mouth reveals its juiciness, density and crunchiness. Iodized tannins, very long persistence. Small red fruits notes in the aftertaste.

Roasted Leg of lamb or Grandma’s Sunday sauce are both a perfect match.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
