The 2015 Villa Fura starts with pristine, sustainable farming of a special plot of 40+ year old vines that have dug deep into the limestone soils to add cut and minerality not always found in these wines.
In October, the crew harvests whole bunches by hand – careful to choose only those with lots of room around the grapes to allow for optimal airflow. This keeps the bunches from rotting as they undergo the traditional four month process of drying out.
This is certainly not an easy style of wine to make and it’s not cheap either – since on average half the juice disappears during the drying process requiring twice as many grapes per bottle as a typical wine!
However, classic Amarone is a bombastic over-the-top explosion in a glass. The 2015 Villa Fura is tight and firm with chewy tannins and a round, elegant mouthfeel. There’s a lot to unravel here, so don’t be in a hurry. Dark cherry and chocolate notes dominate with hints of spice and a long lingering finish.

In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
