Val di Suga’s Single Vineyard Brunello Sites:
VIGNA DEL LAGO in the north side of Montalcino expresses the essence of the lighter and more feminine style of Brunello di Montalcino from continental weather and predominantly clay soils.
POGGIO AL GRANCHIO is in the South East side of Montalcino and expresses the nature of galestro shales soils. Due to the soil the wine shows lower pH and higher acidity with high level of thick and firm tannins. It is the muscular expression of Brunello di Montalcino with the most age worthy character. On the nose it shows a combination of red and black fruits complexed by lifted leafy note and gamy character. The palate is bloody and full of energy.
VIGNA SPUNTALI is one of the oldest Brunello vineyard sites made with the concept of the single vineyard. Spuntali expresses the nature of the sandy soils and Mediterranean climate. Here Sangiovese ripens very well and reaches outstanding levels of generosity. On the nose it shows combination of candied orange note with spices and Mediterranean herbs (thyme mint rosemary). The palate shows supple fruit wrapped tannins with creamy long savory texture.

95 Points, Vinous
Dusty rose, cocoa and sweet herbs offset by dried citrus and a hint of shaved cedar lift up from the darkly alluring 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio. There are depths of velvety texture here, offset by tart woodland berries, salty minerals and zesty acids, and grippy tannins that come forward toward the close. Youthfully structured and cheek-puckering, the 2013 is still in need of a number of years to come fully into focus, but it is also packed full of tension and character. I’ll be very happy to taste this again in another five years
94 Points, Vinous
The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali captivates with its dark florals and earthy bouquet. Here I’m finding freshly tilled soil and sous-bois giving way to musky black cherry and Indian spices. It’s a wine of power and elegance, casting velvety textures across the palate along with mineral-and-citrus-tinged red and black fruits. There’s a lot of pleasure to be found here already, even as this tapers off lightly structured and with a buzz of residual tension. Another two to three years should put the 2013 Vigna Spuntali in a very special place.
93+ Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Lago (with only 5,000 bottles made) sees fruit sourced from a vineyard site located in the northern part of the appellation. Unlike the Poggio al Granchio expression that is aged in new 300-liter French barrique, this wine is instead aged in large 30- and 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks. In theory, this wine sees less oak-exposed surface area and follows a classic or traditional approach to Tuscan winemaking. Stylistically speaking, this Brunello is sharper and glossier with fragrant tones of wild berry and rose hip. The acidity is more pronounced, giving this wine beautifully contoured edges.
Fresh off its feature as one of Wine Spectator’s ‘Exciting California Values Under $25’, winemaker Matt Cline looks to stay hot with his release of the 2019 Contra Costa Zinfandel. This one is a beauty crafted off old-vines that are now between 110-140 years in age. There’s a ton of darker fruits that drive this one with a dusting of baking spice. The fruit is pure, fresh and long making it both delicious on its own or terrific with a burger, BBQ ribs, or grilled leg of lamb. Crazy cheap for what is in the bottle, load up!
An amazing, once in a blue moon shot at acquiring all three of the single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from the family behind Caymus at a buyers-only price of $120 (27% OFF). Each single-vineyard in the Wagner portfolio is very different– each with unique soil, climate, region and even Pinot Noir clone. Each is from the 2021 vintage and is new and yet to be scored. Not to worry though, these always rack up big scores and Las Alturas was just #11 wine of the Year from Wine Enthusiast in addition to a 96-pt score. The 2021 single-vineyards are sure to rack up the big scores they always do– but we don’t have the luxury of waiting. Now’s the time for an awesome collector’s opportunity. Pinot and Caymus lovers, rejoice!
The second year of this elegant, silky smooth Willamette Valley Pinot Noir crafted by Bertrand de Villane of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti fame. Again it comes from the gorgeous Winter’s Hill Estate about 700 feet above sea level in the Dundee Hills. All indications are that the 2019 is going to be one of the best for Pinot Noir since 1991. A flawless summer that benefited from very little rain mixed with cool, breezy summer nights. With a round, supple mouthfeel and a sturdy backbone this will age gracefully for a decade plus. Bertrand’s wines just have a signature stamp that is unmistakably his. This is phenomenal.
Once again dialing up fruit from 1000-1500ft in elevation in the Dundee Hills, Chad’s 2021 is juicy, laser focused and roaring out of the gates. Chad tells me that similar wines (very similar wines) off this vineyard are raising their prices up to $55/bottle from $45 this year due to 2020’s lost year. But where most people are raising prices to recoup last year’s losses, the CHAD Pinot Noir price is somehow lower. A true gift from our favorite winemaker.
