“A killer value that’s up with the best at the price point” -Jeb Dunnuck
In the Spring of 1993 California publisher, Patrick O’Dell, purchased Johnson Turnbull Vineyards and renamed the property Turnbull Wine Cellars. From that point on, the winery has become a true force in Napa Valley, now one of the most iconic names in the entire Valley.
The winery is equipped with 145 acres of vineyards within the Oakville and Calistoga districts of Napa Valley — representing a diverse range of microclimates and terroirs. Perhaps their flagship bottling is the Oakville Reserve – at least that’s what winemaker Peter Heitz will tell you. In the 2019 vintage in particular, the wine really showcases such astounding depth of quality, it couldn’t be more true.
Drawn from two vineyards in Oakville (68% Fortuna Vineyard, 32% Leopoldina Vineyard), the 2019 Reserve is one of the best made from this great winery in recent memory. That’s not all that surprising given that the 2019 vintage in Napa has been deemed, “a miracle” on more than one occasion, and is seeing lots of wineries make some of their best ever bottles. This beauty comes armed with four scores of 94 points or higher including a 95 from the always stingy (especially with Napa Cab) Wine Spectator, and a 95-point Cellar Selection designation from Wine Enthusiast and even 97 points from the famous Wine Bible.

97 Points, Karen Macneil (Wine Bible)
“…A beautifully-structured, intensely-flavored Napa Valley Cabernet. Turnbull, a small wine producer in Oakville, right in the heart of the valley, has an “insider” reputation for making fantastic Cabernets—wines of great power, richness, and elegance. I love the way this Cabernet’s fine tannin frames the luscious savory flavors. And while at $95, the wine is not inexpensive, it could easily go up against Napa Cabernets costing two or three times as much. If you’re ready for a bit of indulgence (or want to give a wine lover a sensational gift this year), Turnbull’s Reserve Cabernet is the wine you need. 14.5% abv.”
95 Points (Cellar Selection), Wine Enthusiast
From a pair of vineyards in the appellation, this wine is earthy in tobacco, sage and black currant. With admira- ble length and breadth, it features rich berry fruit adorned in a touch of molasses, dried herb and oak, deliciously built for the long haul. Enjoy best from 2029 to 2039.
95 Points, Wine Spectator
Delivers a lovely burst of pure, unadulterated cassis and cherry puree, with hints of violet, singed vanilla, loam and anise. A subtly inlaid graphite spine carries the finish. Beautifully proportioned. Accessible now, but there’s no rush at all. Drink now through 2036.

A killer value that’s up with the best at the price point, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve offers medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of currants, plums, chocolate, iron, and a touch of tobacco. Nicely concentrated, beautifully balanced, and elegant, it’s a terrific wine well worth seeking out. Drink bottles over the coming 10-12 years or so.

The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
