For Ed, a third generation California winemaker himself, couldn’t pass up his dream of starting a project with his son. And away from the Napa Valley machine, he could go back to doing what he loved to do above all, making small lot wine off the tiniest of parcels.
It doesn’t get any smaller than today’s Cabernet, cut exclusively from the steep 10-acre terraced vineyard of the Sbragia family doctor, Dr. Andolsen (I kid you not). Located deep in Dry Creek’s western foothills, the Cab shows off Ed’s favorite blocks and it’s absolutely ridiculous good for the price. This has long been an area where Cabernet has been overlooked for Pinot Noir and Zinfandel, but with Ed and his son at the helm, Sonoma County’s stock is on the rise.
Aged 18 months in new and used French oak barrels, the wine shows off a decadent mix of blue and purple fruits on the nose with a floral component and then layers of black fruit and a hint of sage on the pallet that hits you in waves and finishes long and strong.

This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
