I like guys like Marco Bacci because he’s a hustler. The man who birthed the “Corbaia” label also was super smart to secure properties in the 3 best Tuscan appellations (Chianti, Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano). Antonio Galloni of Vinous has praised him countless times– saying that the Chianti Classico he makes at Castello di Bossi is “consistently amongst the very best”.
But I think it’s his wines at Renieri that represent the true jewel in his crown– with a terrific program in place to produce some of the most vibrant, well-structured Sangiovese in Montalcino and at prices that consumers can really dig into.
A lot of winemakers in Montalcino use the Sangiovese that didn’t make the cut in their Brunello for their Rossos but not Marco. Every wine he makes, he uses all estate fruit, and every block of the vineyard is attached to a wine.
The Invetro Tuscan blend is a particular treat and the best value in his portfolio. It’s a consistent recipient of James Sucklings ‘Top 100 Bottles Under $30’ recognition, for his ability to create a fresh, seamless blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. It’s energetic with a strong acid base, notes of freshly picked roses, cherries, raspberries and crushed walnuts. The finish is savory and long, hitting way above its weight class.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
