Ever since the winery’s start in 1990, the goal at Quintessa was always to have the most beautiful wine estate in the world, with the best winemaking team making the best wines. That much is clear. The winery is always at the top of the Napa Visit list– a picturesque 270-acre plot in Rutherford right in the heart of Napa Valley with a massive, state of the art tasting room and 17,000 square foot wine caves on the premises.
On the winemaking side, the team includes superstar consultant Michel Rolland, joining Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle/Leviathan) and superstar young winemaker, Rebekah Wineburg who joined the team in 2015 after stints at Staglin and Rudd. Ever since Rebekah joined the team in 2015, the winery has seemingly reached an even greater level of craftsmanship than ever before.
With the arrival of the brand new 100-point 2019 bottling, the winery punctuates their rise in standards even as they have always remained in a very short list of America’s top wineries. The Wine Enthusiast who brandished the wine with a 100-point score, called this, “a masterclass in winemaking.” No arguments here. This is an epic bottling in a near perfect vintage in Napa. But this particular one has the distinction of being perfect.

100 Points, (Cellar Selection) Wine Enthusiast
“This is a winemaker’s master class in blending and understanding of a long-standing site. Dried herb, cedar and pencil shavings accent lifted red fruit and brilliant acidity on the palate, with a supple yet still youthfully grippy texture that is framed by structured, graceful tannins. Enjoy from 2029.”
99 Points, James Suckling
“So much earth and spice with walnut and wet earth. Like fog laying over the valley in the morning. Black fruit. Medium-to full-bodied with super-fine tannins that are long and persistent, with graceful progression and length on the palate. So long, with real definition. September 2022 release. From biodynamically grown grapes. Hard not to drink now, but will age wonderfully.”

It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
