Crossbarn is the project Paul Hobbs started to honor his family’s farming legacy. It is a great project and a Nicholas Wines favorite whenever we can get our hands on it.
Crossbarn strives to craft wines that capture the truest expressions of the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County, and Napa Valley appellations. By sustainably nurturing each vineyard and using minimalist winemaking techniques, Crossbarn is a reflection of the ideals of farm life and having a deep sense of respect for family, a love of the land, and the joy of collaborative effort.
The 2018 Crossbarn Sonoma County is particularly good though. Armed with a 93-point score and a review from Antonio Galloni in which he called the wine, “beautiful” and “a hidden gem in Paul Hobbs’ range.”

Aromas of blackberries, conifer, walnuts and dried flowers follow through to a full body with firm, silky tannins and a beautiful finish. It’s linear and fine. Juicy. A new addition of Alexander Valley and Blue Mountain give this some beauty. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley) is absolutely gorgeous. Nearly half of the fruit is Paul Hobbs’s new estate vineyard in Alexander Valley plus Rancho Salina on Moon Mountain. Elegant, polished and refined, the 2018 is a very beautiful wine. Sweet red cherry, crushed flowers, spice and mint add lovely shades of aromatic nuance. The Sonoma Valley Cabernet is a hidden gem in Paul Hobbs’ range.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
