With the help of Andre Tchelistcheff, the famous agronomist, Marchese Lodovico Antinori planted the first French vines in Bolgheri which lies in the heart of Tuscany’s coastal region, Maremma in the early 1980’s. It’s safe to say the region has never been the same since.
Ornellaia has established itself among the iconic wine estates in Italy (and beyond). The estate is dedicated to producing charming, rich and opulent wines, full of Mediterranean character and finesse, reflecting the estate’s unique terroir in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast.
Ornellaia is one third of what has come to be known as the Big 3 Super Tuscans, along with Tignanello (the first Super Tuscan) and Sassicaia. Each year, these are some of the most gorgeous, age-worthy bottlings and the magnificent 2019 bottling from Ornellaia is no different. This is still a baby, but already is starting to show it’s potential as a near perfect wine, so it’s no surprising that this one comes with all the big scores. I only have six bottles total. This should make a few lucky collectors very, very happy.

This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
