After 17 years at Joseph Phelps – Bruce Neyers was ready for a change. Sure – having joined the winery in its upstart days and watching its rise to fame was exhilarating and rewarding, but Bruce was ready to hang up a shingle of his own.
So, in 1991, he and his wife Barbara (Chef & Manager at Chez Panisse) began Neyers Vineyards on a rocky north slope of Pritchard Hill, alongside Sage Creek. To pay the bills, Bruce began as national sales manager for Kermit Lynch – where he had a 26-year run that left an undeniable mark on his approach to winemaking.
But of all the rich experiences working for arguably the finest small importer in the country – one in particular stands out. During a 2009 trip to Domaine Lavantureux with Neyer’s winemaker Taddeo Borchardt, Bruce noticed Taddeo off in the corner – obviously in a very animated conversation with Roland and his son David.
Back at the hotel that night Taddeo could barely contain his enthusiasm. He believed he had cracked the code – his theory vindicated by the Lavantureux father-son duo. Back in California, Taddeo had recently discovered a rocky strewn vineyard – situated in the coldest part of Sonoma county across an ancient dry creek bed.
The rocky soil and high natural acidity would be ideal for Chablis-styled Chardonnay. Even better, the vineyard was already planted to unique heirloom Chardonnay, known as ‘Shot-Wente’. All of these factors combine to create a Chardonnay of purity seldom seen in California – pears and fresh peach dominate with a tingling acidity ready to cut through the butter of any seafood dish you care to throw at it.

92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, James Suckling
The winery could never expected their Tuscan Vermentino would become as integral as it has – even 25 years later, it’s still a key piece of the puzzle for Campo Maccione. It’s an unassuming wine with great viscosity and bright, savory flavors that way overdelivers for the price. James Suckling agreed, as did Wine Enthusiast. Suckling gave it a 90 and deemed it “an interesting take on Tuscan Vermentino.” Wine Enthusiast took it up a few notches, attaching a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designate to the wine along with a 92-point review for the wine “with a sophisticated restraint.”
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
