As you can imagine, we’ve been in pretty good standing with the Wagners, the incredible family responsible for the Caymus wines. The past year, we were able to offer the flagship Special Selection Cab, the Caymus Cabernet, Schooner Voyage, Quilt Cabernet, even their criminally underrated Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc.
But even so, there is one wine that you haven’t seen in an email offer for quite some time. That’s because I usually get just 30 cases and they blast through the restaurant wine list over a few weeks each June and then it’s gone.
But on the heels of last years success– we finally got some more Mer Soleil Reserve Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands– we just have to take it in January! This wine is killer though, it’s worth drinking now. Bright and extremely inviting on the nose with fresh citrus and lemon notes. The wine is expressive, dancing out of the glass with aromas of lemon pie. It’s classic Caymus, rich and hedonistic with a wonderful creaminess. Mer Soleil’s fresh and juicy fruit, balanced perfectly by the new vintage’s vibrant acidity.

2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, James Suckling
The winery could never expected their Tuscan Vermentino would become as integral as it has – even 25 years later, it’s still a key piece of the puzzle for Campo Maccione. It’s an unassuming wine with great viscosity and bright, savory flavors that way overdelivers for the price. James Suckling agreed, as did Wine Enthusiast. Suckling gave it a 90 and deemed it “an interesting take on Tuscan Vermentino.” Wine Enthusiast took it up a few notches, attaching a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designate to the wine along with a 92-point review for the wine “with a sophisticated restraint.”
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
