In the “city of a thousand fountains”, wineries such as today’s Maison Saleya, much like the Sabine from a few weeks ago, enjoy the distinct advantage of nearly 300 meters in altitude. At these heights, the cooler, windier nights allow for slow steady development, extended hangtimes and yield grapes with perfect acidic balance.
Maison Saleya combines the wonderful terroir of the Coteaux d’Aix with a terrific winemaking team, so I’m never surprised by all the high scores and all the accolades like last year’s “Best Buy” from Wine & Spirits Magazine. But, I was surprised to get an email that the new 2020 release was not only stateside but even available.
You may remember, a few months back all French wines under 14% alcohol were facing a 25% tariff that threatened to go up to 50%. Many importers bailed on the idea of 2020 rosé all together, instead holding onto their 2019 inventory and hoping to space it out through the spring and summer seasons.
But after one sip of the 2020 Maison Saleya, my importer friend doubled down and increased his order by 50%. After the sample bottle crossed my desk last week, I followed suit and took every case available to me.

94 Points (Best Buy), Wine & Spirits
“Deep in color and vinous in its red fruit, this is a spicy and compelling rosé. There’s pristine strawberry flavor at its core, surrounded by accents of red grapefruit, blood orange and fennel. The wine’s intensity rises like its bubbles from base note to high notes, leaving a pale red fruit ghosting in the finish.”
Recently Wolffer Estate has expanded their famous Rose line to now include a Cotes de Provence Rose. For my money, it’s hands down a better bottling – an energetic and super fresh pink wine created from the French staple Rose grapes of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah as opposed to the Long Island version that has a whole lot of varietals mixed in. It’s bright and balanced and the perfect treat for the pool or beach as the weather warms.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
